Welcome to the Living on $2 a day Project at the University of Mary Washington.
Have you ever desired to make a direct difference in the life of another? If so, then here is an opportunity. There are thousands upon thousands of entrepreneurs in developing and transitional economies that have a business plan that they believe will pull themselves and their families out of poverty. For the most part, however, these plans are not acted upon because their access to low-cost small-business loans is either limited or foreclosed. A relatively small amount of start-up money from you can make the difference. Here is how you can partner-up with a cash-constrained entrepreneur.
Step 1: You sponsor one or more UMW student(s)
Step 2: UMW students live on $2 a day for five days
Step 3: UMW students transfer your donation to KIVA.org
Step 4: KIVA lends your donation to a microfinance institution (MFI)
Step 5: MFI lends your donation to an entrepreneur.
Step 6: Entrepreneur repays loan with interest to MFI.
Step 7: MFI returns donated funds to KIVA
Step 8: KIVA returns your donation without interest to UMW students
Step 9: UMW students take your original donation and loan it back out
Step 10: Tentative steps toward economic prosperity are taken.
